Getting Started
Uploading your DNA file
Which providers are supported, what to export, and how to troubleshoot.
IoA works with raw DNA files from the major consumer testing companies. You upload the file on the Home page; we handle the format conversion automatically.
Supported providers
- 23andMe. Download from Account, then 23andMe Data, then Your Raw Data. The file is a .txt.
- AncestryDNA. Request from Settings, then Privacy, then Download My Data. The file is a .txt.
- FTDNA (Family Tree DNA). Go to myDNA, then Download Raw Data. The file is a .csv.
- FTDNA Legacy. Use the legacy Raw Data download from your account page. The file is a .csv.
- MyHeritage. In the DNA section, open Manage DNA Kits, then Download. The file is a .csv.
- LivingDNA. Go to your profile and select Download Raw Data. The file is a .txt.
File size limit
Files must be under 50 MB. Raw DNA files from all supported providers are well under that limit, so this only applies if you're uploading a non-standard export.
The Processing state
After you upload a file it briefly shows as Processing. This is the conversion step where we normalize the format and index the SNP data against our reference panels. It usually takes a few seconds. Once it shows as Ready, you can run analyses.
Why upload can fail
Upload fails for a few common reasons.
- Wrong file. You uploaded a PDF report or a summary CSV instead of the raw data file. Download the raw data specifically.
- Wrong provider selected. You chose 23andMe in the selector but uploaded an AncestryDNA file, or vice versa. Select the provider that matches your file.
- Corrupted download. Re-download the file from your provider and try again.
- File too large. Only applies to non-standard files; standard exports from all supported providers are small enough.
